Understanding STOK Systems

FAQ

A hybrid system combines an electric motor with a diesel engine or generator. It allows vessels to operate fully electric at low speeds and switch to diesel for extended range or high-power demands—offering flexibility, efficiency, and redundancy.

STOK Electric offers two configurations:
Parallel hybrid systems: 10–200 kW electric motor combined with diesel engines up to 900 hp.

Serial hybrid systems: electric propulsion only, powered by batteries and supported by generators up to 200 kW.

Parallel hybrid: Best for vessels needing high power and speed, like fast motorboats or commercial workboats. Combines diesel and electric for flexibility, fuel savings, and redundancy.

Serial hybrid: Ideal for low-speed or silent operation vessels such as ferries or sailing yachts. Uses a diesel generator to charge batteries, with only the electric motor driving the propeller, enabling efficient and quiet cruising.

Hybrid systems are ideal for motor yachts, commercial vessels, ferries, workboats, and even classic sailing yachts. They’re especially valuable for operators who need electric operation in ports or nature reserves, but also require long-distance capability.

Yes. Our hybrid systems are designed for seamless retrofitting. We offer full engineering support, from propulsion studies and space optimization to installation and commissioning. The compact and modular design simplifies integration into existing engine rooms.

For parallel hybrid systems, the electric motor typically provides between 30% and 50% of the diesel engine’s power required for nominal cruising speed. In serial hybrid systems, the generator is sized at approximately 40% to 50% of the electric motor’s power to efficiently meet the vessel’s nominal energy consumption.

Hybrid systems reduce fuel consumption, noise, and emissions. They offer silent electric cruising, lower maintenance costs, and more efficient energy use. For commercial fleets, this translates to significant operational savings and environmental compliance.

Yes. Our systems enable zero-emission operation in regulated areas. Whether fully electric or hybrid, we help ensure compliance with national and international standards, including ES-TRIN and upcoming emission regulations for inland and coastal vessels.

Our integrated control system makes switching seamless. Operators can choose the optimal mode manually or rely on smart automation based on speed, load, or battery state of charge—ensuring efficient and intuitive operation.

Battery charging can be done via shore power, onboard generator, or even solar. Our bidirectional converters allow flexible energy flow, making the system adaptable to your operational profile and available infrastructure.
